Old Roads

The Milestone is located on the A4130, south side towards Nettlebed, approximately 500 m west from the Bix Crossroads.

It is likely to have been somewhere close to its present position for some 250 years but not on this precise stretch of road as this was not built until 1825. Milestones were first used by the Romans 2,000 years ago, and were literally positioned every mile to show distances to significant places. Giving reassurance to travellers using unmade tracks across lonely and often wild and dangerous countryside.

In Britain their use fell out of favour until the 1633 when road building became a serious necessity and the first Turnpike Trusts collected funds, built roads and collected tolls.
