3-5pm Strawberry Cream Tea in aid of "Raise the Roof" at Bix Church “Raise the Roof” at Bix Church.   At Saint James’ five yearly building inspection, major problems were identified concerning the roof and bell tower wall.   Urgent rebuilding work is required totaling over £ 200,000.   The “Raise the Roof” barn dance in November raised over £ 4,000 and started the fund raising campaign.   Since that time the P.C.C. has been very busy and we’re delighted to report that English Heritage have recognised the commitment of the community and character and beauty of our Church and have agreed to fund approximately two thirds of the rebuilding costs.   This leaves the P.C.C. needing to raise almost £ 50,000 to ensure that the work can go ahead.   Watch this space for news of fund raising events – the P.C.C. are planning a fun tennis tournament ; music evenings and a Christmas party.  Village Hall in Bix Cherry Thomas on 573751 or by e-mail at (duncan12cherry@aol.com)

Talk on the “lost” Churches of Bix by Dr. Stephen Mileson  The “lost” Churches of Bix   The old Saint James’ Church located between Bix Bottom and the Warburg reserve was abandoned in the 1870s.  The building was unsafe and the “new” Church was built on the Bix Common Field.  Several windows and a font were reused in the new Church.   The ruin was abandoned and over the years the roof was lost.  Local benefactors have ensured that the site was made secure and that the grass is regularly cut.  But the Church itself started to succumb to ivy, brambles and saplings.   Earlier this year English Heritage provided a grant of £ 2,414 to clear the Church and to maintain it for three years.  The building is in their top 100 of buildings at most risk.   The site is now much improved.   The P.C.C. is hopeful that in the future volunteers or funding may allow minor repairs to be made to better secure the fabric of the building.   Visitors are welcome, but should bear in mind that the building is a ruin and that they proceed at their own risk.   Last month archaeological investigations are believed to have found the site of the third “missing” Bix Church.   The outline of a stone structure and at least fifteen skeletons have been discovered.   The “lost” Churches of Bix will be the subject of a talk by Dr. Stephen Mileson at Bix Village Hall on September 15th.   Village Hall in Bix Contact  k.j.duthie@which.net for details.
